As the Covid19 pandemic continues to affect all our lives & with international Governments attempting to find solutions to live alongside this invisible killer; global economies are beginning to feel the pinch.
We have already reported on the devastating affect Covid19 is having on the employment sector, with hundreds of thousands of job losses being reported across Europe. As many business sectors are still unable to open namely theatres, live performances, soft play areas, indoor swimming pools & the list goes on; many many of these are already seeking ways to close up for good.
It certainly is a very uncertain time for us all & for some who are furloughed, their futures are still very much in the balance. Many workers who have been furloughed in the first 3 months of the scheme, are now being made redundant as their employers cannot find safe ways to help them return to work & sadly cannot afford to pay the NI & pension contributions which is a necessity from the 1st August.
Finding yourself caught up in the Covid19 pandemic economic decline is causing great difficulties for so many people in the UK, Europe & around the world. With Governments seeking ways to try & support those who have already lost jobs, international borrowing is at an all time high.
So, what can you do if you are uncertain about your job’s future? Can you start to look for another job when you are furloughed & have not had it confirmed your job is unsecure?
One of the dilemmas some people are finding is that if they seek another job, before they are aware if they are losing their current employment; it could affect any redundancy monies they would be entitled to.
Therefore, an employee would have to consider what their priorities are. Should they find a job sooner rather than later, but miss out on redundancy or wait for redundancy, but then find it extremely difficult to secure more employment?
Should I look for another job now?
If you are uncertain if your current employment is going to be secure once your furloughed time is complete, then now is the time to consider your employment future. It will be a difficult decision to make as there is no certainty that any other employment could be secure. However, if you know you are going to make the leap, this helpful checklist could get you going.

Do you know which sector you want to work in?
In our most recent blog we explored how you could embellish on accumulated skills, to secure your next job. If you have been working in the Financial sector for example, but you are a keen & avid gardener; there may be some cross over skills you could use to gain employment in the Horticulture sector as an alternative.
How can you work out what you want to do next?
Sometimes, getting your ideas out on paper, albeit a simple approach, can be the most effective.
Using a large sheet of paper list all of your accumulated work environment skills, alongside your life skills & maybe even include your hobbies.
Then consider where the crossovers are & how each skills set could enhance the other. Later, when you are completing application form’s, you can check the job description against your list & see how you could apply your accumulated skills to the job you are applying for.
Should I play it safe or go for something completely different?
With all of our lives having a level of uncertainty about them, it is difficult to know if now could be the time to look outside of your comfort zone or play it safe & apply for jobs you know you are more likely to get.
In these uncertain times, it might be an idea to consider what is more important. Your lifestyle will go some way to dictate the choices you make. For those with mortgages, families & other commitments, being in employment & being able to pay your way is going to be a priority. However, perhaps if you have less commitments, now might be the ideal time to make a change & apply for jobs outside of your comfort zone.
You may be surprised at what employers are looking for these days & at the end of the day, there is no harm in trying & you may find yourself in a job you may never of dreamed of applying for before, but that inadvertently ticks all of your employment satisfaction boxes.
